BIO
Monica Nelson is a vocalist and teacher who has lived in the Atlanta-metro area for 25+ years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music with a focus in vocal performance from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Her love of performing solo and in choral ensembles is evident through her experience as a member of various choirs led by Kevin P. Johnson, David Morrow, Adam Con, and Craig Hella Johnson, to name a few. Monica held the position of interim music director at Hillside Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Georgia while also working as a paraprofessional in the Gwinnett County School System. These separate lovely experiences in music and education caused her to dive deeper, resulting in the completion of her master’s degree at The University of Texas at Austin in Music and Human Learning in 2006.
Monica established successful choral music programs at the middle school level in Bulloch County Schools and in City Schools of Decatur. During this time her students achieved many honors in GMEA competitions such as LGPE and All-State Chorus. She currently teaches music at Clairemont Elementary School, where the children sing beautifully and confidently.
Monica is the founder and director of The Atlanta Children’s Choir, Inc. The Atlanta Children’s Choir, a non-profit community choir, has been near to her heart for many years. She truly believes that all children, regardless of background and socioeconomic status have immense potential and should have impactful and life-changing musical experiences. She is the proud wife of Lloyd Nelson II and mother to her wonderful sons LJ, Luke, Lennox, and daughter Lenore.
