Join us for a powerful afternoon of rhythm, community, and tradition with Chuck Cogliandro of Kumandi Drums.
This introductory workshop will explore the rich tradition of the djembe, one of the world’s most popular hand drums:
-Learn the history, origins, and culture of West African drumming
-Develop proper playing technique for bass, tone, and slap
-Practice warmups, hand-balancing exercises, and accompaniment rhythms
-Explore dunun (bass drum) music and learn a traditional song from Guinea
No drum? No problem. Up to 15 djembes will be provided for participants who don’t have their own.
About Chuck: With over 30 years of experience studying, teaching, performing, and recording djembe music — including study trips to Guinea — Chuck brings authenticity, passion, and deep respect for the traditions passed down to him by his teachers. He founded Kumandi Drums in 2003 to share the joy of West African drumming, which he has studied with master artists both in the U.S. and West Africa.
